中文想到「怕」，經常就會對應到英文的“be afraid”，所以經常聽到學生有類似的表達：
I am afraid of mosquitoes.
我很怕蚊子。(X)
I am afr台中房屋拉皮aid of huger.
我很怕餓。(X)
I am not afraid of noises.
我不怕吵。(X)
怕蚊子、怕餓、怕吵，或是怕冷怕熱，這類的怕其實是「不喜歡」，而不是真正的害怕。所以當我們用be afraid of去形容的時候，就不自然。
在英文中afraid是一個強烈的字，是很害怕、恐懼，當你說I am afraid of mosquitoes.，那會讓人誤以為有隻200磅的蚊子要攻擊你。（註）
這類的「害怕」可以改寫成：
I find mosquitoes annoying.
我很怕蚊子。(O)
I don陽台擴建’t like to be hungry.
我很怕餓。(O)
Noises don’t bother me.
我不怕吵。(O)
談到害怕，可以用Afraid這個字，be afraid of是比fear更常見的口語，但這個字的錯誤率也高，我們來看幾個例子：
沒有什麼好怕的。
(X)There is nothing to be afraid.
(O)There is nothing to be afraid of.
這個of經常被人忽略掉了，因為它的受詞不那麼明顯，是前面的nothing。
今天可以完成嗎？──恐怕不行。
(X)Can you have it done today?
──I’m not afraid.
(O)Can you have it done today?
──I’m afraid not.
I’m not afraid. 意為「我不怕」；I’m afraid not. 意為「恐怕不行」、「恐怕不會」、「恐怕不是」，比直接用no來得委婉。
他擔心會失去這個客戶。
(X)He is afraid to lose the account.
(O)He is afraid of losing the account.
Be afraid to和be afraid of意思稍稍有差別，be afraid to不敢做，害怕做，怕做了會有什麼不好的後果，假如是擔心某事可能會發生，心裡很不願意這件事發生，用 be afraid of。再一個例句就更清楚了：
I was afraid of offending his feelings.
(because I had no wish to do so)
I was afraid to offend him.
(because he might hit台中公司行號申請 me)
